Inspired by Nature

Nestled in the Manistee National Forest in northern lower Michigan is the cabin and studio where I create the hand built work inspired by my beautiful surroundings.

The Process

I primarily make hand built pieces from slabs of clay. I use a slab rolling machine to roll out the clay, then I form and construct my work into the desired shape. After this step, I decorate my forms with underglaze and sgraffito carved designs. My pieces range from one of a kind sculptural work to functional pottery for everyday use. I find there is nothing better than drinking your morning coffee in a fun handmade mug!

About Betsy

Growing up I was the one who couldn’t sit still or pay attention. As a mediocre failing high school student, I thought taking a pottery would be fun and easy class. As soon as I got my hands in clay, I knew this was different. I was fortunate to finally have a teacher who recognized my potential and encouraged me to continue my exploration of clay. I went on to take classes at my local art Institute my senior year, then discovered I could go to college and continue working in clay (I guess I never visited the guidance office)! I received my BFA in Visual Arts in 1984 from Siena Heights University.

Over the next few decades I rolled in and out of ceramics and metals interspersed with lots of retail jobs, got married and had two kids, got married again, received my 500hr yoga teacher certificate, and owned a succesful yoga studio. Whew…

In 2016, I returned to live in our family cabin, where my seasonal studio is located. I share my life with my husband, Matt and our dog Junebug.
